Need Free Legal Advice? - How and Where to get it

Everyone runs into legal problems once in a while. And as anyone can probably tell you, sometimes you find that you are unable to engage a solicitor or unable to afford one. Sometimes you're not even sure if you need a solicitor.

You may need help. Often times people go to Legal Aid (http://www.legalaid.nsw.gov.au/). Legal Aid is funded by the state government and provides free legal advice and representation to members of the public who are eligible for it.

In addition to this, every state has a network of Community Legal Centres, who are independent, community organisations that provide free legal advice to the public (http://www.naclc.org.au/directory/). CLCs are funded through a variety of sources including state government and other generous organisations. They occasionally assist in representing members of the public.

Some firms and solicitors run their own Pro Bono schemes. Pro Bono means that work is done without compensation for the public good. In these instances a number of them give free consultations or agree to assist the needy clients by providing services at a reduced fee. It is rare that a private solicitor provide services without charging any fees.

However, it is not wise to approach solicitors and ask that your work be done at a pro bono rate just off the bat. Their time and knowledge is just as valuable as that of a doctor or a dentist - and you certainly don't ask them if they can treat you for free!
