Relief for First Home Buyers

Housing affordability is already an issue affecting many Australians and this has only been compounded by the concerns of the global financial crisis. While many countries are struggling under the weight of increasing debt and insecurity, Australia remains relatively untouched and governments at all levels continue to take decisive and early action to protect the economy.

Buying a first home is often a challenge with many first home buyers identifying deposits as a major stumbling block. The First Home Owners Grant and First Home Plus Schemes were introduced to ease the burden of first home buyers and hopefully assist them in entering the property market. The changing economic climate and increasing property prices have lessened the benefits of earlier schemes and it was time for a change.

The Federal Government recently announced a boost to the First Home Owners Grant for new and established homes. First home buyers exchange contracts between 14 October 2008 and 30 June 2009 will receive $21,000 for a newly built home and $14,000 for an existing home. Eligibility requirements remain unchanged.
